Bad Start to the Weekend

After a fun afternoon of swimming I came back to school to find that money had been taken from my desk drawer. This money had to have been taken either Thursday or Friday. This money was to go towards swimming and a treat for the students at the end of the year. I am very disappointed to see something like this happen. It is a shame that one persons actions affect so many people. Hopefully this money will reappear in my desk on Monday.

See you on Monday.

7 days left!!

Wow this year has flown by!! It has been a pleasure to teach every single student in the class this year!

Here are a few important announcements for the end of the year.

The trip to Wascana park on Friday, June. 24 unfortunately had to be cancelled. We will still be traveling to the pool that afternoon so we will require parent drivers to drive to the pool at 12:45pm and to drive back to the school at 2:15. Please send a note in your child's agenda to let me know. Thanks!

Bowling on Tuesday, June 21 in the afternoon.

Report cards sent out on the last day of school Tuesday June. 28 at 2:30pm.

Science Presentations

Please make sure that your child is complete their Severe Weather Presentation for Tuesday! Any assignment that is not complete will receive a 10% per day penalty. Thanks

Swimming June. 17 + 24

We will be traveling to the pool on these two dates and if we can gather enough parent drivers we don't have to charge for the cost of a bus. The swimming runs from 12:45-2:15. We would want to leave the school around 12:30 so we can make it there in time and we would leave around 2. Let me know if you are willing to help out with this. You can email me or send a note in your child's agenda. Thanks!

Encourage music!!

Here is a little information for students that are interested in band in the upcoming year! Band is a way to meet new people, and it is proven to increase brain function!

* Grade 5s: Band recruiting is coming soon! Why not check our Spring Concert to see what band could be like for you next year. Hope to see you there! The Johnson Area Elementary Bands annual Spring Concert is Tues. May 31st at 7:30 pm

* Though band may be a different priority in each of our students' lives it is important for everyone to do his/her part to ensure our final musical experiences will be the best they possibly can be. Band is the 'ultimate team sport'! Students, please take some time every week to make sure your contribution to our team will help to make our final experiences great ones.

* If you'd like to get more involved in our band parent association please join us at our next JAM meeting on Tues., May. 10th at 7:15pm in the Johnson library.

Easter Break

I hope everyone is having a great break! Mine has been full of marking and getting a lot of new stuff ready for when we come back and of course a little relaxing as well! Can't wait to see everyone after the break!

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Great week!

This has been a great couple days so far! The students are being very respectful and a lot of work is getting done! A fantastic way to start Easter break! After the break we will be having a math test on area, perimeter, volume, and capacity. I would encourage every student to try a few questions during the break so they don't forget everything that they learned.

We have started our NHL playoff draft and every student had a chance to participate.

Crazy week

This week has been rough for many students. Not sure if it is the change in weather or what. Please remind your child about being respectful to everyone in the class. There have been many instances where students are being disrespectful to each other. Lets try come to school with a different attitude next week.

Congratulations number 19!!

Throughout this year all the students have been involved in a NHL draft. They picked nine players and one goalie. These players accumulated points for them all year and the season has finished and number 19 is victorious with 647 points. Number 16 was second with a score of 619 and third was rounded out by number 9 with 604.

19 will receive a base ball cap with any team that he desires. (He picked a Riders hat)

In the upcoming days I will get the students to fill out a playoff draft sheet and the prize for the winner of this will be announced shortly.

We have two full weeks and one short week together until we begin Easter break! Lets make sure everyone keeps up with all the homework so that no one has to come back to school on the 21st. The students are off to a great start!!

Please bring a 2L pop bottle to school and if you have any old light weight fabric or plastic bags please bring them as well. We will be making an eco-friendly wind sock with these materials.

Thanks!

Busy week!!

This has been a very busy week filled with assembly's, guest speakers, and many more things! On Tuesday we had an artist come in and teach us about ATC(Artist trading cards) and the students were able to make and trade quite a few. On Wednesday we are lucky enough to attend the school talent show. Thursday we will attend the grade 7 "Extravelganza" in the gym.

Friday is back to a normal day and in the afternoon I will be away. I am traveling to Calgary for a National Field Hockey tournament.

The week after is also a VERY short week as well with only 3 days...busy March!!!

I hope that my blog has been helpful to most of you out there! I will try and have more detailed calendar entries from now on so that you have more of an idea what your child needs to do for homework and assignments.

We are in the process of wrapping up the math unit right away. I have heard from some students that this way of division and multiplication is quite a bit different from the way their parents were taught. I totally understand this and it was different from the way I was taught too. The Math Makes Sense program really focuses on the process and different strategies to solve problems. We have just began to learn about traditional long division and multiplication. If you are more comfortable with this style feel free to get your child to do it this way. If they are comfortable with the strategy they are currently using you can let them use that way too. Eventually they will learn the traditional way after a little bit of practice. I have sent home a math worksheet that practices these skills.

The science test is tomorrow and the students seemed like they are ready for it. I told them last week that it was scheduled for Wednesday. All of the students were instructed to take home their textbook to study and from what I saw today, many did!
As a side note I would like to apologize for the amount of time it has taken for the food projects to be completed. With limited access to the laptop carts it makes it hard to get everything done within a short period of time. This project will be a main portion of the grade and will be graded by their presentation, report, and also they will be evaluated by the peers that were in their group. This means that if someone did more of the work and others did less it will show up in the peer evaluation. I understand that group work is sometimes a pain for many students but I have tried my best to make sure that every student/group has evenly split up the work. Also with the peer evaluation this allows the student to receive a better mark if he was a main person in the project.

In social we have began our First Nations unit about treaties. We will be learning what a treaty is, why they were made as well as many other things that surround treaties.

We are just about to finish our last piece of visual art in the Picasso unit. Students took 3 pictures of themselves and were instructed to cut out pieces from each picture and make a "Picasso-esk" picture. I will be placing these photo's on the website as soon as they are done!! Some of these photo's you can't even tell who the students are anymore!!
Below is an example of one of Picasso's paintings.

Feb.9/11

Just attended a workshop on inquiry based teaching! I am very excited to get going with the new science unit I have planned! Inquiry based teaching allows the students to be more involved in the learning process. Students will have more choice of what they learn within the unit and will be much more engaged!
